Posted @withregram • @gail_stiffe_books_paper Dyeing with turmeric (with washing soda) and red onion skins by leaving in a jar in the sun for a few days. Paper was wrapped in gauze to protect it. Red paper was recycled board other was pineapple paper so considerably stronger. I'd put a couple of pieces of rusty metal with the onion skins. Was looking pretty dull so I used some herbal tea to brighten it up.

Repost from POV member Anne Payne who has been using her time at home to explore Indigo with some incredible results: Over this time of social isolating and an opportunity to just do activities I’ve not had time to try before, I’ve been able to make some paper, stitch some fabric in Japanese Shibori designs, make my very first indigo vat, dye all the pieces I’d prepared and put all I’ve learnt into a book. I’m about to make a book of newspaper clippings over this past 6 weeks. And a Leunig book of his cartoons commenting on COVID 19. Nearly finished. Thank you so much to Barb, Leanne & Anne T for your encouragement & sharing your knowledge. Lots of fun and of course great sense of achievement.

Repost from Liz Powell: ”At last The Guardian of the Southern Convergence is striding out of the studio on her way to Burnie and Paper on Skin. Denise N. Rall and I have been working like Trojans to complete all those bits you think will just take a minute but don't. Now we just have to get her to the courier. Life will be much simpler when inter regional travel is (cautiously) opened up.” Liz also sent us some details on the construction of this amazing piece: “Materials include: kozo which I have hand-dyed using shibori techniques with indigo, much of which was then treated with the joomchi technique (like paper felting) and polished with cold wax. Pants were silk screen printed with my drawings of diatoms found in Southern Ocean, which were then beaded. Crystal beads also find their way around other parts of the work. There is a lot of running stitch, many pearlescent buttons and a great deal of work!”

Thank you for tagging us Jennifer 😊Posted @withregram • @artahortabella The royalty of handmade paper fibres: darker paper is NZ flax (Phormium tenax) harvested in Tasmania years ago, and lighter paper is my ‘kozo faux-abaca’, a blend of one-third kozo and two-thirds local banana (Musa spp., but not Musa textilis or true abaca). Both papers whisper light yet strong and natural. Love them .

Posted @withregram • @gail_stiffe_books_paper Looking for a box to send Connie's Coat to Tassie for "Paper on Skin" I found all sorts of treasures from years ago, tessellation was in my exhibition at Dragon papers 2001 or 2 and so was "The Grove", packed up, the rolls and paper stones. The nest pieces and the artist book were in "Nesting" at 69 Smith Street Gallery in 2009. The mandala game traveled to Cleveland in 2012 for the joint IAPMA, Friends of Dard Hunter conference.

And another member of POV with an entry accepted into Burnie Paper on Skin. Congratulations Liz and Denise. Your entry is beautiful. Liz Powell: “Denise Rall and I have been successful in our application to the Burnie Paper on Skin Exhibition! Our entry is Guardian of the Southern Convergence, the current that constantly circles Antarctica and forms the natural boundary around this fragile sea and continent. We are working with metres of indigo dyed kozo that have dyed, resisted with various shibori techniques, silk screen printed (thanks to Anne Leon making the silk screen for us from my drawings of radiolara found in krill) punished with wet and dry joomchi, stitched and polished.
With Denise and I living 2 hours apart the current travel restrictions mean less face to face work-shopping but more coordination via phone,snail mail and email. COVAD 19 will not beat us! and this project is certainly keeping us busy.
Cheers to the organisers of this event for working on how to run it as an on line event (barring the even more unforseen)

“Connie’s Coat” was created last autumn by a

“Connie’s Coat” was created last autumn by a group of papermakers gathered at a country property to immerse themselves in art and to prepare a group project for Papermakers of Victoria’s forthcoming exhibition, ‘Hidden’. The pulp was Red hot poker, Iris, Flax, Papyrus, ….the resulting paper was strong and a suitable colour for an outdoor coat and so this beautiful garment was born. Now in its second iteration, Connie’s Coat has been accepted into ‘Paper on Skin’. To achieve this, the coat had to be carefully taken apart and given the momagami treatment to soften the paper for wearability, then reconstructed. The artists are Anne Gason, Barb Adams, Chris Rose, Chris Smith and Gail Stiffe.

Posted @withregram • @gail_stiffe_books_paper Finally made my Covid books, the hardest part was coming up with a vaguely decent acrostic poem. I decided to use some of my Indigo dyed papers though the base paper is Bangladeshi hemp. While sorting them out I peeled a layer of Kozo off one of the leaves and came away with a blue heart 💙
