When the production of books expanded greatly following the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century, limp vellum was used as a quick and cheap way to produce a cover for a book, rather than the more time-consuming and expensive full leather binding.
This style of binding is ideal for making artist sketch books, and because no adhesive is used in the binding, the cover can be removed and reused on a new textblock.
In this workshop, participants will make a model of a limp vellum binding, sewing a blank textblock of paper and making a lace-on cover. Due to the high cost of vellum in modern times, we will use an alternative paper-based material which resembles parchment, for the laced-on cover; hence the pseudo-limp vellum reference.
Note: Materials used in the workshop will be different to those shown in the above photo.
Material Fee: $5 to be paid to the tutor on the day
Cancellation policy: If a participant withdraws their workshop registration within two weeks of the starting date of the workshop, there will be no refund unless a replacement can be found.
