Ema will introduce you to the traditional art of Japanese Woodblock Printing. Bring along your own simple design for one or two colour printing. Learn how to carve your design onto a woodblock and print this onto paper to create original pochi-bukuro. Pochi-bukuro is a traditional Japanese decorative paper envelope for giving New Year’s and congratulatory gifts.

Materials fee: $30 to be paid to Ema on the day. This will cover:
- woodblock
- Japanese paper
- template for pochi-bukuro envelope
to take home, as well as the use of:
- carving tools
- printing brushes
- baren
- glue
- ink
Participants should bring:
- a sketch book (any blank paper will be fine)
- a grey lead pencil ( HB/B/2B are all fine)
- simple image(s) for single/two colour woodblock printing
For participants wanting to continue their printing journey at home, Ema will have most of the necessary equipment and materials available for purchase.
Tutor: Born in Japan and having studied traditional and contemporary printmaking at university in Tokyo and completed a Master of Fine Art degree in Nagoya, Ema has been based in Melbourne since 2010. She has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions over the last 15 years, and has conducted numerous woodblock print and textile workshops in Australia, Japan, and other countries where she has held artist-in-residency positions.
