Make watermarks in handmade paper using a range of simple techniques and build up a ‘library’ you can use over again. Then use these watermarks to build layers of colour and imagery in a wet sheet of paper. The workshop is suited to all skill levels; beginners to advanced, as techniques can be adapted easily to ensure success.
Watermarking techniques will include wax drawing, found objects like lace, cut and stick images, stitching and simple chiaroscuro with wire mesh. We will also use stencils to add imagery to the wet-formed sheet.
Day one will start with a quick demonstration of the techniques and materials used. Participants will then make each watermark on a separate mesh and form sheets to test and record process. This ‘library’ of watermarks will be used the following day to build layers by using different sheet forming techniques.
Day two will explore building up layers either by multiple dipping or laminating separate sheets as well as the use of stencils to add a further layer. Time will be spent problem solving things like difficulties in couching, releasing the sheet from the watermark, sheet forming without upsetting the previous layer etc.
Examples of different techniques and finished artworks will be made available to discuss.
